Tiffany Stone or Bertrandite is a natural gemstone, that is Opalized Fluorite. A purple, lavender, white gemstone sometimes with patches of mauve, yellowish-brown &black. This gem has a hardness of 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale. This stone comes only from a very small area in the Western deserts of Utah, at the Brush Wellman beryllium mine in the Topaz-Spor Mountains of Juab County's Sevier Desert. Beryllium (Be) is a light-weight, high-strength yet brittle alkaline earth metal which is used in structural materials for aircraft, missiles, communication satellites and space vehicles. Adding to the scarcity is the fact that the extraction process for beryllium involved crushing large quantities of material which yield only 1 to 2 percent of the concentrated ore.
It is a soft to hard Opalized stone that forms in very small to 100+pound "nodules", composed of predominantly Opalized fluorite (blues, purples and whites), often with many others minerals such as Agate, Dolomite, Rhodonite, Maganese oxide, Beryllium and others. It often has a "crackled" appearence and is called "Tiffany Stone", "Bertrandite" or "Ice Cream Opalite". The mine is now closed to the public.
